PRIVATE COUPLES INTENSIVE IN CHARLOTTE, NC
The Relationship Reset Intensive
When your relationship feels overwhelmed by conflict, emotional distance, broken trust, or years of repeating the same painful conversations, traditional weekly therapy can feel frustratingly slow.
The Relationship Reset Intensive was created for couples who want something different.
Rather than meeting for one hour each week, you’ll step away from the distractions of daily life and devote two or three days exclusively to your relationship. Together, we’ll uncover the patterns keeping you stuck, strengthen emotional connection, and create a clear path forward—one built on understanding, accountability, and lasting change.
This is not simply more therapy.
It is a thoughtfully designed, highly personalized therapeutic experience that combines the depth of attachment work, the practical tools of the Gottman Method, and the transformational power of Certified Relational Life Therapy (RLT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
WHY A COUPLES INTENSIVE WORKS
Relationships rarely unravel overnight.
The patterns that create resentment, loneliness, criticism, defensiveness, and emotional disconnection often develop over years. These patterns deserve more than fifty minutes a week.
A Couples Intensive allows us to work deeply without interruption.
Instead of stopping just as important conversations begin, we have the time to understand your relationship from the inside out, practice new ways of relating, and create meaningful momentum before you return home.
Many couples describe accomplishing the equivalent of six months of weekly therapy in just a few days.
12–18 hours of direct, uninterrupted clinical time
1 couple in the room
3 integrated approaches built around your patterns
FORMAT
Two formats. One focused container.
2-Day Intensive — 12 Total Hours
Two consecutive days, six hours each. Built for couples who need to break one entrenched cycle or want a focused reset rather than a full overhaul.
Best for:
- A specific, recurring conflict
- A relationship “tune-up” before a big transition
- Couples with limited time away from work
- Couples who are “stuck” and need momentum to get unstuck
- Couples working with another therapist who need a new set of eyes
3-Day Intensive — 18 Total Hours
Three consecutive days, six hours each. Room to work through deeply entrenched patterns, a significant rupture, or layered issues that need more than two days to land.
Best for:
- Long-standing or deeply rooted patterns
- Recovery following a specific injury, such as infidelity
- Big transitions that need intentionality to repair from or prepare for
- Intensive relational learning and dedication to living in relational integrity
- Couples desiring deep work to create maximum impact
THE COUPLES INTENSIVE CLINICAL APPROACH
Three evidence-based approaches. One fully integrated treatment plan.
Your intensive isn’t built from a single therapy model. It combines the strengths of the Gottman Method, Relational life Therapy (RLT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) into one personalized experience designed around your unique relationship.
Gottman Method Couple Therapy
A structured, data-informed map of your relationship — friendship, conflict style, and shared meaning — that points the intensive at what actually needs to change.
Relational Life Therapy
Direct, no-blame naming of the roles each of you slips into under stress, and practical tools for trading control or withdrawal for full-respect honesty. Explore the early neurobiological wiring shaping the current triggers and how to recognize and manage these responses.
Emotionally Focused Therapy
Slowing down the cycle of disconnection long enough to find the softer feeling underneath the fight, and practicing reaching for each other instead of away.
HOW IT WORKS
From first email to your written plan home.
Phase 1 — Consultation call
A short call to talk through what’s going on, confirm an intensive is the right fit, and choose between the 2-day and 3-day format.
Phase 2 — Assessment, before you arrive
Both partners complete Gottman Assessment, attachment assessment and a brief individual interview, so the intensive starts already pointed at your real patterns instead of spending day one on intake.
Phase 3 — The intensive days
Two or three consecutive days, six hours each, in Breta’s Charlotte office — just the two of you, with breaks built in so the work stays sustainable, not grueling.
Phase 4 — Integration & aftercare
You leave with a written plan naming your specific cycle, your repair tools, and what to do in the first weeks home. Most couples schedule one follow-up session several weeks out.
IS THIS THE RIGHT FIT
An intensive tends to work well when —
- You’re stuck in the same fight, just with different words each time
- Weekly sessions feel too slow for what you’re facing
- You’re recovering from a specific rupture, like an affair or a betrayal
- You’re heading into a major transition and want stronger footing first
- You can’t get to weekly sessions but can clear two or three days
It’s probably not the right starting point if —
- There’s active domestic violence or an immediate safety concern
- One partner has already decided to leave and isn’t open to repair
- Untreated addiction is putting either of you at risk right now
- You’re looking for a group setting rather than private, one-on-one work
If safety is a concern in your relationship, an intensive is not the right starting point. Reach out and Breta can help point you toward the right level of care first. If you’re not sure your relationship should continue, Discernment Counseling may be a better first step. Looking for a group format instead of private sessions? See the RLT Relationship Bootcamp.
ABOUT BRETA
Breta M. Collins, LMFT
Breta is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Charlotte who built this intensive format around the same evidence-based methods she uses in weekly sessions — just without the week-to-week gaps. She’s a certified Relational Life Therapy therapist, trained directly by Terry Real, fully trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and has extensive training in Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Her approach is direct rather than precious: naming the pattern plainly, giving you tools you can use the same day, and tracking your nervous system’s response alongside the relational work — not just what you say, but what’s happening underneath it. In the couples intensives, she offers humor and humility, referencing the reality of her own 30 year marriage and the work she and her husband continue to do for connection.

FAQ
How is a couples intensive different from weekly couples therapy?
An intensive condenses what would normally take months of fifty-minute sessions into one continuous block of focused time, so there are no week-long gaps for progress to stall between sessions.
How is this different from the RLT Relationship Bootcamp?
The Bootcamp is a group workshop for up to twenty people on fixed dates. The Couples Intensive is private and one-on-one, scheduled around your calendar, with the entire time devoted to your relationship alone.
What happens during the assessment before the intensive days begin?
Each partner completes Gottman-based questionnaires and an individual interview ahead of time, which Breta uses to build a plan tailored to your specific patterns before day one starts.
Do we need to be in crisis to do this?
No. Many couples book an intensive proactively — before a wedding, a move, a baby, or another major transition — to strengthen their footing rather than to recover from a crisis.
Is an intensive appropriate if there’s active abuse or a safety concern?
No. An intensive is not a substitute for safety planning. If there is active domestic violence or an immediate safety concern, reach out so Breta can help point you toward the right level of care first.
Do you offer virtual couples intensives?
Not currently. Intensives are held in person at the Dilworth Counseling office in Charlotte, NC.
What happens after the intensive ends?
You leave with a written integration plan, and most couples schedule a single follow-up session several weeks out to check progress, with the option to move into regular sessions if that’s useful. Many couples continue the work with their current couples therapist.
Your relationship doesn’t have to stay stuck
Whether you’re trying to heal after betrayal, reconnect after years of distance, or strengthen the foundation you’ve built together, meaningful change is possible.
The hardest part is deciding to begin.
Email Breta to set up a short consultation call and confirm whether the 2-day or 3-day format fits your situation.
